(update 10 october – long time without update ^^- with parts done)
I have made the personnal choice that the V3 of Obenkyo will be pretty different. In fact for quite some time, I have watched the uses of tablet rising – and as I personnaly own a tablet, I can see first hand that the App is crippled on this kind of hardware…
Let’s see what I want to do to get to “V3″ (I might do interim build if it drags too long).
- Use Android Settings API (on the V2, I have created my own settings intent, it’s bad design practive, and is often slower – one of the reason why Obenkyo is so slow at launch) DONE
- Improve on coding: I have learned much of Java coding since the start of Obenkyo and some parts of the code are really bad. The changes will improve performance, reduce memory consomation and it’s needed to do a nice tablet version.
parts needing work :
Menu (the layouts are a mess), test page (this whole code is a mess), kana list (I have to simplify this part of the code),DONE kanji display view (would be great if could get it to “open source releasable” level), kanji information View,
- Update the KanjiVG file from new version of the database DONE
- add an action bar (have to see how to manage with small screen) (Done)
- add Fragments management in the app (for tablet design) (Done)
- Improve design : I will try to improve the design to add a little more colors (while keeping the old design if I mess up too much) (Reported for next version)
- Show the color level in the display list (like in Vocabulary) and DONE – add a button to switch from display mode to change selection mode DONE (And I love it 
)
- add “hint” button on the test screen so that you will be able to “hide some wrong multiple choices”, show all or part of the drawing, or get the translation of the sentence for instance (I’m on it)
- add a “try again” and “skip” button on the drawing tests (I’m on it)
- add more info in the vocabulary screen (Verbs, Adjective …) (Reported for next version)
- improve search (at least get a screen to show the SKIP search info, perhaps the romaji search, and see if the drawing search is not too long) (Reported for next version)
- and the many other suggestions that where sent to me (too many to list)
-> pretty sure to be in 3.0
- push Database to SD (Done)
- add setting to show more than 20 entries in the history and/or keep only last entry and all errors
- give the option to check whole group of kana DONE
-> might no be in 3.0
- improve the stoke study part (allows to hide drawing …)(Reported for next version)
- enable a way to use external font for the kana/kanji (Kaisho fonts) (Reported for next version)
And many more (I have to browse my mails and comments to have the full list)
In short, quite some work on my hands, but hopefully work where I can lean the right way to do things “the android way”.
I will try to update the post with what have been done and if there are things I want to add to the list

Just want to say good work. When I got my Samsung Galaxy S a year ago I downloaded the program and if I am honest I would say I did not find it so useful. But recently I downloaded it again and was very impressed with the progress! In fact I have started using it to teach my 4 year old some beginning Kanji using the breakdown by JLPT levels in the study section. I get him to watch the stroke order, and then he uses the guided “draw” function to trace over himself (he gets a sense of achievement at doing this, and because if he has to write using a pen, he is too much of a perfectionist and if it is not good the first time around he’ll give up – but great for getting him to remember them and the stroke order in the first instance!)
I think for the purposes of actual revision it would be really good if you could include an option to hide the guided draw function so that after watching, going through step by step, one could then have a go themselves without having to do a test. I would start using it more often I feel as it would be a good way of studying, in addition to the particles and verbs sections you are going to introduce. Keep it up – gave you a five star rating and would be willing to purchase useful add-ons in the future if made available

I hope that your son don’t mistakes my drawing recognition mistakes as unfounded critics … there is much to do to improve it …
Yes, enabling to hide the shadow is on my list of “too many todo things to do”.
I will see if I can add it to V3 or if it will have to wait another release.
Concerning the possibility to have paid add-ons, right now it is not where I want to go also because my Japanese level is pretty poor (I made Obenkyo to help “me” in the first place ^^), that’s why I rely on so many Creative Commons sources. So not only I would feel bad to make people pay for work I did nothing to create but also there could be bad information (for instance someone reported me that “らいねん” was translated as “next Week” in the french dictionary … pretty bad translation ^^;).
It’s also a way to escape responsibility for mistakes, but that’s the best I can do with my level ^^
I prefer doing it with few ads well placed and donations

I doscovered your app on the market and I have to say this is the best one. The imporvement I would like to see, beside what you alreadyy said and just as a suggestion
are the following :
When testing for kanji can we also have a few user selected example (selected from the dictionnary, just like we select kanji from the JLPT kanji database)? Having a few examples helps a lot ( for my case at least ) to memorize the kanji.
When testing numbers, kanji ones, can we have the pronunciation in hiragana (hide at first and visible after let say a touch on the screen)?

As always, thanks for a useful app. And thanks for fixing the crash problems so quickly. The development of kanji and vocabulary is great!
My biggest problem after updating is that everything has become much slower. For every tap on the display it takes between 1 and 4 seconds before anything happens, whether I tap a menu option or answer a question in a test. Before the update a test was fast, I tapped the right answer (well, sometimes the right one
) and I immediately had the next kana on the display. Now, a test with all 48 basic katakana will take two extra minutes and it feels painfully slow. I use a HTC Desire. Is it something that is fundamentally changed that makes it slower and is it possible to fix? Or is it something on my phone? But I have no such problems with other apps.
Another minor thing; I’m afraid you got the Swedish translation of “Change selection” wrong, it should be “Ändra urval”. The l is missing at the end on every section except the Katakana one.

Well to select the “user selected example “I though the user could selec them directly from the dictionnary, just like you select kanji from the jlpt list by touching/clicing them.
I suppose this might be a tad difficult to find the example you want in the sometime very long list of the dictionnary ( the one for the “one/ichi” is a perfect example of a very long list).
Having an example really helps to memorise the kanji, and if the user can choose which example ( in accordance with the text book he’s using) that would be terrific.
But nonetheless a very good job you have done with Obenkyo, I am eager to see what you have in store next

There should not be significative reason for it to be so slow :/
one reason could be that the way I save your statistics is starting to grow too big (it’s something I am trying to work on with 3.0, but I fear the changes won’t be enough to speed up things …
To test if it is the amount of data stored with your info, you could try to uninstall the app and install it back. Unfortunatly you will lose all your stats, but hopefully it would gain back some speed … also do you have enough space left on your device ?
If I remember correctly the HTC desire don’t have much space in main memory (I have to work also on the possibility to “push database to SD for this kind of device), you should see if you have enough space left.

Ithil, I could, by default, display vocabulary flagged as “important” (I have this kind of info from Edict and I use it to sort the vocabulary in the kanji listing) and in the menu enable you to change the “default vocabulary to display” …
I have to see how to integrate it :/

I followed your advice and reinstalled the app, an lo and behold, it is now fast as lightning. Thanks for the tip.
I just remembered another interesting thing. I have never been able to use the “Save as personal list” feature. It behaves very strangely: When I type a letter in the list name textbox it immediately disappears. If I continue typing I sometimes see letters, sometimes not. And obviously I can’t save the list since the textbox appears empty. The only way to make it work is if I type the name of the list in another app, copy it and then paste it into the textbox in Obenkyo. That works. (by the way, if I was to be meticulous, which I annoyingly enough am, personal is misspelled with two n’s).
Now, back to my super fast vocabulary test.

This app just keeps getting better and better. Any chance if V3 has a push to SD capability. that there would be an option to extend the kanji dictionary in that version? As I’m advancing I’m noticing that there are quite a few of them that are in regular use that aren’t tested for the JLPT. Anyway, thanks again for an awesome app.

Hi,
the push the Database to SD should be there for V3 (I have to see what the impacts are since I go further than Android classic App to SD), but seeing the codes at hand it should not be so hard.
As for the modification of the DB, it is not scheduled but for future version I was thinking of adding an “import from file” using format from popular Japanese app … but the thing is that I’m not sure of what apps are popular actually ^^;

This way if at any time browsing the list of kanji you think I should add this one you can hit the “switch mode” in the action bar and change the selection. (I will probably also add a selection button on the Kanji information screen).

Tout d’ abord un grand bravo pour les nouveautes de l’ application.cest vraiment une application de grande qualité que k’ utilise depuis longtemps sur smartphone.
J’ ai tout de fois quelques remarque pour l’ utilisation sous tablette depuis que je l’essaye avec ma petite eepad transformer. Je ne sais pas si vous avez prevu déjà tout le design sous tablette mais voici quelques suggestions. Afin de profiter de tout l’ ecran je pense qu’il serait intéressant :
– de regrouper sur le meme ecran la plupart des fonctionnalitéss lors de la revision kanji ou kana, cest a dire avoir le tracé qui se fait puis a côté la zone pour s’ entraîner a tracer le kanji ou kana.
– dans le cas des kanji peut etre essayer d’ adopter plusieurs colonne avec par exemple a gauche le kanji, son tracé et l’ entrainement de dessin et a droite prononciation et vocabulaire.
– et en petit dernier etant donné l’ espace je trouverais pratique d’ avoir plusieurs fois la possibilité de s’ entrainer a tracer, un peu comme les lignes d’ ecriture en maternelle et primaire ^^
Voilà je ne sais pas si ces remarques peuvent concerner d’ autre personne souhaitant egalement utiliser la future version tablette.
Encore bravo pour l’ application !

Bonjour
Pour le design de tablette, je réfléchit plus à un affichage avec un panneau sur le coté avec la liste de kanji et un affiche “plus grand” avec le kanji avec en effet un espace plus grand pour dessiner le kanji et peut être améliorer le kanji …
mais plus ça va plus on me remonte des souci génants sur l’app donc je pense que je vais essayer de monter une V3 avec le design tablette et me concentrer sur les détails supplémentaires pour plus tard.

Ui cest sûre que les problemes sont plus important que les petits details graphiques.
D’aileurs accessoirement je suis developpeur java et je debute en android niveau dev mais si un jour une aide etait necessaire je pourais consacré un peu de mon temps. Je ne sais pas ssi tu procede a des tests par des beta testeur mais sous tablette j’ ai la possibilité d’ en etre un également.

J’ai installé la mise à jour et je viens de découvrir les points oranges dans la liste des kanjis recherchés.
Je comprends bien l’intérêt pour la clarté des listes affichées, mais je me servais beaucoup de ces listes pour la traduction en conversation, sur du vocabulaire simple (dans les 1945 jouyou kanji), on avait des résultats pertinents et efficaces.
Je creuse un peu plus au cas où j’aurais zappé un réglage/paramètre, et je reviens ici de temps en temps pour suivre l’avancement des travaux

Non, mais de mémoire, quand je recherchais un mot français, j’avais la prononciation en hiragana/katakana, (oups, je me rends compte que j’ai posté un peu vite, sans me relire), maintenant, les prononciations ont disparu un niveau plus loin (un clic, vers le kanji).
Et pour l’apprentissage, j’aimais aussi beaucoup me balader de kanji en kanji
Donc la question ne se pose vraiment que pour les listes de recherche.

Non parmis les truc à corriger :
- dans les traductions françaises du vocabulaire le sens N°1 n’est pas repris parfois (pas bon ^^;; )
- Certains mots de vocabulaire anglais ont la 1ere lettre qui manque
- la gestion de la selection du niveau de vocabulaire marche aléatoirement (on selectionne JLPT 4 et il test finalement sur JLPT5)
- certains cas de crash
- dans le test de vocabulaire si on fait une erreur le score du mot selectionné est bien augmenté (*1.5), mais l’enregistrement du mot demandé est buggé du coup il n’enregistre pas bien le score
Autant dire faut que je sorte une version … elle ne contiendra aucune des modifications mises dans la liste de la V3, mais corrigera ces bugs.

This is an amazing app. It helped me study quite a bit. Though, would it be possible to also include radikal information in the kanji detailed information section as well? I often find myself switching to a dictionary in order to find a more detailed explanation on them…

The fact is that I am thinking about it but I lack a good and open source of information for this … I think that KanjiVG provide me this kind of info (without description of what it is), but I am not sure at 100% that this info is reliable, so for now I choose not to add it.
But I will probably have to dig for this kind of data for the radikal search and I will add it to the kanji screen

Well … it would add some code complexity but nothing impossible in fact … I will have to see if I can do something with the possibility to add your kanji list from a file … I am sorry to tell you that it won’t be on the top of my priority list ^^;
the other solution would be to use personnal lists and to switch from one to another … I will consider also the possibility to display your personnal list on the list view …

Tout d’abord un grand bravo pour ton application qui est remarquable ! Je l’utilise tous les jours comme support d’apprentissage, elle est parfaite.
Pour la rendre encore plus polyvalente, je te proposerais bien la suggestion suivante.
Par type de kana, Hiragana ou Katakana, pourquoi ne pas proposer plusieurs ensembles (sélections) de révision indépendants ?
Par exemple, je veux travailler la reconnaissance des caractère (kanas romaji), je sélectionne le groupe 1 qui contient tous les hiraganas/katakanas. Si je veux travailler l’écriture, je sélectionne le groupe 2 qui ne contient (par ex) que les kanas simples (sans les accents et les compositions). Par type d’exercice on n’a pas forcément le même périmètre de travail je pense (enfin pour moi au moins).
Dans la même logique, il pourrait être bien de proposer des exercices sur caractères mixtes (hiraganas et katakana mélangés). Par exemples, reconnaissance des kanas (tous confondus), dessin des kanas…
Ce ne sont que quelques idées. Dans tous les cas, encore merci et bravo pour cet excellent travail.

En fait je réfléchis à ajouter un mode plus “mix de tests” si j’arrive à trouver du temps pour faire d’autres tests … typiquement ça fait un bout de temps que j’aimerai faire un test sur les verbes, dates, heures & kazoekata …
Donc il se pourrait que je rajoute une fonction de mix de test un peu à la “super wario” où tu as différents tests aléatoirement.
Mais sans un certain nombre de test, ça ne sera pas bien interessant

Super App Android. Je me suis enfin décidé a reprendre l’étude des kanjis, n’importe ou n’importe quand. Du coup la progression est assez rapide Je devrais bientôt pouvoir passer au JLPT2
2 suggestions:
- L’ajout de tests sur les clefs et radicaux.
- La possibilité d’exporter ses stats, et résultats de test. Export CSV, ou direct sur google doc par exemple.
Voila je sais pas si ça a déjà été proposé. En tout cas bonne continuation.

Si tu trouves une erreur n’hesite pas à me la remonter (histoire que les bases Creative Commons sur le net soient aussi bonnes que possible).
concernant tes suggestions :
- prendre en compte les radicaux de kanji : C’est quelquechose à quoi je réfléchit fortement … non seulement pour les tests, mais aussi pour la recherche et pour les info pour les kanji.
Mon principal souci est le fait qu’il faut que je trouve une source “juste et en Creative Commons” que je peux exploiter pour integrer dans l’App. J’ai une ou deux pistes (en particulier KanjiVG semble avoir cette info déjà dans la base que j’utilise, mais il faut que je vois si elle est juste – et il me faudrait aussi leur nom ^^; ).
- export des stats: C’est une bonne idée et qui pourrait ne pas être si complexe à mettre en oeuvre :/
Pour l’export direct vers google docs, par contre ça sera complexe :p
C’est d’ailleurs lié à une autre suggestion : permettre d’importer du vocabulaire et des “bases de vocabulaires” venant d’autres appli …
En résumé, je note tout ça mais ça sera sans doute pour apres la V3 (je galere déjà pas mal à avancer dessus … faudrait que je post une update d’ailleurs).

Just updated to V3 – it does look and feel amazing. Though, I have to note two things. For multiple choice and draw function, when the translation and reading is very long (7 lines or so), the first line gets cut off, and you can’t scroll up to see it. And for drawing, for me personally, the new window size is a bit too small – hard to write compactly and not hit submit or erase button along the way.

At first I would like to thank you for this brilliant program. I have a simple suggestion that I think would improve the study workflow for the users.
When I choose “study” and then a list of kanjis (eg. JLPT level 5) and press the one of the kanjis, I can click the touch the draw to see the stroke order and practice drawing over the existing drawing.
My simple suggestion is a toggle in this specific screen to hide the kanji and allow the user to draw it in empty square, then the user can un-hide the kanji to see if the kanji match. This way the user can proceed to the next kanji convinced that he can write this kanji without reference.

Kanji writing game is more responsive with the touches of the capacitive stylus “elago” I use. I do not know if it is an issue with only me, but I hope the “responsiveness” issue can be resolved.

Indeed it is one thing I consider doing in the future (I have to recode part of my “KanjiView”, but I am in the process of doing it to make it open source).
Concerning the responsiveness of the app, I would be really interrested in knowing the device you have trouble with. As far as I know you are the first one to report me this kind of issue.
What kind of problem is it ? does the stroke show up slowly ? does it follow your finger like 1cm after it ?
Since a capacitive stylus is supposed to mimic the finger I find surprising that it would work “way better” … might a specificity of your device.

Thank you very much for your reply. My device is Galaxy SL I9003. I just yesterday updated to Android 2.3.6 and the responsiveness is great. I think it was something with the system being slow, because the problem was either a stroke was read like 2 strokes, or a curve is read like a line.

Last time I was crying for a kanji search function, and next update, it’s there
This app is getting better and better… 
It helps me a lot! (had jlpt 4 exam last sunday ^^) So I would like to thank you very much!
Suggestions (I know there’s a lot on your list, so don’t take these as complaints, more like improvement options):
- Kanji search should be based on kun/on reading (I voted for that
), because, for example, the first kanji of ‘benkyou’ is ‘exertion’ which I didn’t even know what it means.. Would be easier to narrow kanji list by readings. A good example for a search engine is the ‘JED’ app, which is a japanese-english word and kanji dictionary.
- Multiple personal list selection. I mean, more than one personal list could be selected by ticking the ones you want to use, and then the test would involve all the kanjis from the ticked lists. This would be great, because at class, we learn kanjis by 10 or 20 packages, and then I could make lists for each package, and then select which ones I want to practice.
- There must be some bug in the randomizer, or I am stupid. I selected ‘every char once’ and turned off ‘analytics’, but still it asked ‘elder sister’ like 6 times. ‘Elder sister’ must have a really bad rating, because I skipped it a lot (which was registered as fail). Also, I noticed that it likes to ask for the same kanjis with this setup (I have 161 kanjis in one of my lists, and when I start a test, I always get the same 30-40). Did I set it up wrong?

- kanji search by reading : yes it’s on my list, I have to create a improved seach (with romaji/drawing/key search) I will try to work on this soon
- multiple lists: yes, it would not be so hard to implement, but I would have to change the design of the screen pretty deeply :/
will consider it for future release (not high in my priority list :p)
- do you have the very last version that I released yesterday ? there should be a fix for this kind of issue. If you have the latest I will have to search for some other bug >_<
One kanji once should have one question for each kanji and even if you get one wrong it won't ask you again.
