Wait what? … I have posted Obenkyo V3 yesterday and there are no post in the blog … how come?
Well yes, sorry I am late but the release was pretty chaotic (well it was a pretty big update after all code wise)
So let’s start with the thing I am proud of: Tablet design !
Well nothing extravagant here, and most of the work will go unnoticed since I have very few table users but I really wanted to add a pretty picture in the start screen
Clicking on it will allow you to find more info about it by going to the wikipedia link or the Japan-guide link (great resource for those wanting to visit Japan).
Then everything will be displayed on 2 or 3 panes (or fragments)
It’s a great way to display data and there is still much work to do to take full advantage of theses
Then the big change for smartphone design is the use of the action bar:
This enables me to show some functionality to the user (like the settings button …).
One big change is also to change the settings screen for something more “classic” for Android apps:
And of course I have added many features like :
- push Database to SD Card
- better search (still no Romaji Search but at least a “kanji” search and a kana search for vocabulary)
- change mode on every list (selection mode or display mode)
- a new hint function in the draw tests (yes it is pretty hidden in the app menu but I don’t have much room on the screen) that flash the solution on the screen for 2 seconds)
- possibility to change the drawing recognition decision and to send me you drawing so that I can try to find out what went wrong to improve the algorithm
and many more.
I do hope you will like the changes and be sure that I will improve some more the design in the coming weeks (and perhaps also fix a lot of bugs I created with this version ^^ ).

First of all, thanks a lot for your app, it really helped me with learning Japanese!
I have yet to test all the new features of this version but I may have found a bug. On the kanji list where you select the kanji you want on the tests, by pressing the menu button there is a “Clear weight” button, shouldn’t this button make Obenkyo reset the weights of all the kanji? At the moment it seems that it does nothing, is this a bug or have I not understood the use of this button?

Hello, je viens tout juste de finir le téléchargement, et je ne me rappelle plus si je t’avais envoyé une de mes requêtes principales quant aux tests de kanjis : la liste “plus” à la fin ne propose que 20 entrées. Or quand tu termines un test de 50 et que les erreurs étaient plutôt au début (donc les sujets “à travailler”), le seul moyen de revenir dessus est la liste classique.
Petite option en fin de test : toutes les fautes sont ajoutées à une liste perso, histoire de bosser son sujet ?
Je continue de (re)découvrir avec la v3 et te ferai des commentaires plus pertinents ensuite.

Merci pour la mise à jour, un joli bon graphique pour l’application! Super aussi de pouvoir envoyer les problèmes de dessin de kanji trop récurrents.
Sur le fond, je viens à nouveau quémander (désolé :p) la fonctionnalité manquante qui me frustre le plus : pouvoir dire à Obenkyo que l’on ne connait pas la réponse dans le test de vocabulaire.
Depuis sa mise en place, je passe la plupart de mon temps Obenkyen sur ce test et c’est vraiment gênant car ça oblige à quitter le test pour en relancer un nouveau à chaque fois, tout en n’augmentant pas le poids du mot inconnu.
Moins important mais qui serait très intéressant pour ce test de vocabulaire, ajouter une option pour ne proposer que des types de mot identique pour les choix multiples. Plus clairement, s’il faut trouver un verbe, qu’il n’y ait que des verbes car souvent il n’y a qu’un mot qui a une terminaison de verbe donc on trouve par défaut.
Après, ce n’est sans doute possible que si la base de données de mots utilisées les identifie comme verbe, nom commun, adjectif, adverbe, etc.

Oui en effet, j’ai déjà eut cette requete de remonter plus d’erreurs.
Il faut que je vois pour le faire en économisant autant que possible la mémoire (d’autant plus en mode dessin).
Excellente idée de permettre à l’utilisateur d’ajouter ses erreurs à la liste perso …
J’avais en projet de revoir certains détails des tests, if faut que je vois ça …

Tant de choses à faire et si peu de temps
En effet, le bouton “skip” est passé à la trappe (j’ai déjà mis bien trop de temps à sortir la V3, donc j’ai taillé dans le gras pour avoir une version “out” )
Pour l’info “verbe, adjectif …” je l’ai dans la base de données, mais j’ai un boulo d’interface à faire pour le “présenter” … peut être à la manière des Kana en les “groupant” avec des checkbox …

I love the new features (this app is probably responsible for 90% of my Japanese knowledge) but there is a frustrating issue with Kanji draw, possibly due to my tiny (320×480) screen. The top line of text showing the Kanji translations is cut off at the top by about 75%. It looks like you just need to scroll upward, but it won’t scroll any further.
Just wanted to make you aware of this, keep up the good work!

Ola. J’aime bien l’idée du flash d’aide pour les kanjis, mais je t’avoue que le temps que l’œil oublie ce qui était tracé et prenne en compte l’apparition soudaine du nouveau dessin, on est un peu perdu. J’aurais bien vu ça avec un appui-relâché, comme ça, je détermine moi-même la durée, ça permet aussi de prendre le temps sur chaque kanji de lire la définition en entier et d’envisager le tracé, notamment sur les kanjis un peu complexes.
Par ailleurs, je ne vois pas toujours la nécessité de sortir la liste plus après chaque kanji, sauf si je clique sur le plus. Souvent, je souhaite juste cliquer sur le carré “correct” pour voir quel aurait dû être l’ordre des traits.
Bref, je m’amuse bien

Hey, I’m one of your tablet users, and I must say the update rocks! I follow the RTK book and especially appreciate how much quicker it is to find and select the kanji I need to review. Now onto feedback and questions:
In the draw kanji test, it seems that 圧 (dominate, pressure, etc) has an issue where it still checks that the drawing is correct, but the comparison with the correct drawing will be blank and say 0 strokes.
Also, in the old version there was an option to quiz every kanji in the list once, and now I can’t find it anymore.
As I said before, I’m using Remembering The Kanji to learn them, and so I create my own lists for every lesson in the book. I tried to find the obenkyo folder to look for the files where it saved them, so I could share them with others, but you’ve hidden it well. if you have your reasons to not want people to go rummage in, can I humbly ask for an option to export them?
while we are on topic, since RTK has an unortodox approach to the order of learning, I found a couple of kanji covered missing from obenkyo, would it be much of a hassle to add them? ( 頁, 埼)
Uhm, what I think I’m trying to say is, thank you very much for this tremendously helpful and well made app and would you mind, in the future, making it more RTK accessible? I can share with you my custom lists to help if you wish (although I’m still fairly early in the game, so there is still a lot of work to do ;p)

Why do people always find critical bug just after I post an update
Concerning 圧 I will have to investigate it further and I was able to reproduce the bug.
also indeed it seems I removed by mistake the “one kanji once” test mode.
Concerning the location of the personal list files, it is in fact stored in the first place I found in Android : shared memory … in short it is in a protected folder of your device and you will have to have a rooted device to get it.
I have to code a push personnal list to SD Card and so I need your input to get the format you are expecting (right now it’s a XML like format with the index in my database for vocabulary for instance).
Its on my short list of features.
Concerning adding kanji, it’s no “so much work” (I have translation data from kanjiDict & Kanji drawing data from KanjiVG), but I will have to generate back my database (there is quite some work to do to keep it so compact :p ).
I have added your kanji to my “additionnal kanji” short list in the code so it will be added the next time I generate the Database. If you have more data to be added, just give me the list I will add them (I don’t want to add all 6000 Kanji From KanjiVG if I have to have the database to grow to 10MB ^^; ).
In short, I am working on it

pour le flash, c’est que je considère le “hint” plus comme un “juste un affichage rapide” pour que tu te forces à te souvenir.
Avec la solution du “hold” c’est plus un coté “apprentissage” :/
ce à quoi je pensait, serait peut être d’afficher un menu rapide avec:
- Juste un coup d’oeil (actuel)
- affiche moi le premiers traits (juste pour se mettre sur la voie)
- est ce que je suis sur la bonne voie (un peu dur à coder proprement avec mon algo)
- affiche moi le résulat (où il le laisserai jusqu’à ce que tu clique sur l’écran)
Mais je craint un peu de rendre trop complexe l’interface :/
j’augmenterai peut être un peu le temps parce qu’il est sûr qu’avec le flash l’affichage est plutôt court ^^
Par contre je ne comprend pas trop ce que tu entends par “sortir la liste plus après chaque kanji”, c’est le fait d’avoir une liste complete de tous les derniers test précédents caché dans le menu déroulant ?
Je dirai que ça dépend des utilisateurs (on me demande d’ailleurs d’ajouter une option “ne pas mettre de limite au nombre d’objets” ou de toujours garder les erreurs)
Pour le coup je pense qu’il serait sans doute plus interessant d’avoir à la fin la liste des erreurs regroupés.

Well, having a tablet I didn’t think about internal storage as an issuse, but as most of your userbase is on phones, I can see it.
This makes me slightly more reluctant on asking for additional kanjis, especially ones like 頁 that on their own are almost unused, but as a primitive they’re far more common and so you’re gonna learn it anyway.
That being said, as it seems you’re game anyway, I thank you for adding it so I can have my RTK lists be complete
On that note, I wish I could just give you a list of additional kanji on the get go, but as I am still only on lesson 8 (of 56) I’ll meet any eventual missing (additional) one as I slowly learn my way through. So best I can do is bug you now and then with a couple more.
Though… if one day you find yourself with nothing to do (as if! hehe) consider the idea of maybe making obenkyo modular? an optional install of the whole databasa, maybe even as a plugin on sdcard.
There you go, homework!
Oh, I almost forgot, regarding personal lists, I didn’t think of the format at all, since I didn’t think to be using them with anything other than obenkyo. I suppose you could leave it as is, xml is widespread and easy enough to work with (you just might want to use some obscure extension so people whom do not know what they are doing don’t go and mess it up ;P).

Well I don’t mind adding more kanji if it is usefull (I remembering the kanji consider it usefull to help learning other compound kanji, I will gladly add them

Concerning the idea of making Obenkyo more modular I actually consider it, but there is many hurdles to overcome (like my database format that is pretty rigid, or the fact that in case of a database update I have to “save” what you have added.
There is also something I have to code is a “backup your level” so that even if you change phone you won’t go back to zero.
For the personnal list output (and input) I was thinking of using the format of popular windows apps so that maintaining it would be easyer and convert them “on the fly” to my database format. My main issue beeing that I am not familiar with any of these apps ^^

I think there is some mistake with katakana “ja”, “ju” and “jo” symbols. It’s “ヅャ” instead of “ジャ” and so on. It’s also impossible to define which of “ja” is meant in test mode. Excuse me if I don’t understand something.

Concerning the export of personnal list there is 3 scenarios :
- pure backup (points/selection/personnal lists)
I’m not sure of how simple it would be to implement :/
but I believe that I should find many tutorials on how to do it …
- Export/import file (so you are limited with the boundaries of the content of the app)
this should not be too hard to code in fact, and I think I will code it for next release at least for kanji and I have to consider it for vocabulary
- import new vocabulary/Kanji
This have some issues … first : how should I store it (it will probably be on a separate database in SD Card) second how should I present it (would you want to delete some from old JLPT ? should I group them on “external Database” group ?
I will probably wait a little bit before doing the last point :/

Well according to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katakana it is “ジャ” (left->right and bottom -> top) and not “ヅャ” (one other think I have to code is to enable the user to choose it’s font from fonts on the SDCard Folder to fetch a Kaisho Font from the web – I can’t bundle it myself for copyright issues 20$ by app is out of the question for me
).
Concerning the “kind of JA”, in short Obenkyo will never give you an error if you answer “JA” to ジャ or ヂャ (or even answer ジャ or ヂャ for “JA”) on multiple choice question, for the drawing test for “technical reasons , I had to made things differently so I write an “hint” under the text : JA (ZI + YA) so you should understand that it “HAVE” to be ZI = ジ & YA = ャ or DI + YU => ヂャ
So I am not really sure of where is your issue here ? would you want Obenkyo to handle things differently ? people told me that one way to write it was “not used” but if it is the case, you can just remove it from your selection :p

I just won’t leave you alone won’t I?
I have some new observations on the interface that I’d like to report.
So when we load up the app [on the tablet] we are presented with the main menu with the choices on the left and the picture on the right.
now we ‘click’ on kanji and we’re presented with, let’s call it, the ‘kanji main screen’. from there I go to one of the lists and enter ‘selection mode’ and edit my selection. ok, the colored bar with the counter on top of the list? while I’m editing it, the bar changes in real time to reflect my changes. but when I go back to the ‘kanji main screen’ the bar does not update, it still shows the counters there were before I made the changes. if I want it to update, I need to press on the kanji button on the left to refresh the ‘kanji main screen’ and then it updates to reflect the new changes. this happens in vocabulary as well, but it does not happen with the kana lists, possibly because the kana’s are edited directly on the page, without having to explore the lists.
ok, now we’re back to the ‘kanji main screen’ and we want to use the search tool to add some more kanji. we search for ‘kanji A’ press enter and we’re presented with a list in display mode. we switch to selection mode and add the kanji. then, still in selection mode, we search for ‘kanji B’, ‘kanji C’ and add them as well. now, if I switch back to display mode, the text in the search field goes back to ‘kanji A’. I can sort of see why that would happen if I understand how switching between the two modes works (it’s not the same ‘page’, it’s a different one that just looks the same, and when you go back to the previous one you find it the way you left it), but for consistency’s sake, I thought it’d be nice if when going back to display mode it’d retain the last kanji I searched while I was still in selection mode.
and since we’re talking about searching, we’re back to the kanji main screen. now I search for something and are presented with the list of results. now if I search something else the list gets updated in real time which is nice. but, if I typo while writing, or search for something that’s not in the database, I get the ‘no results’ message and get kicked back to the kanji main screen. this happens in both display and selection mode. it’s be nice if it told be there’s nothing, the list went blank, but I stayed there. the main annoyance with this is that it drops the virtual keyboard as well, so I have to press on the search icon again a start anew.
all of this is on a tablet.
regarding exports/imports,
. I don’t see the point in deleting stuff though? yeah, storage awareness, but unless you make the app entirely modular, I’d keep the basic stuff it has. if you outgrow it, just deselect it. I mean, most people won’t need kana anymore after a short while, but deleting can’t be saving that much space, so why bother coding an option for it?
I like all three scenarios. heh.
simple list export/import would be nice to share lists with other people. it’s not all that useful, I think, since… well, what use would someone have to load your list? sure, I could share my pre-made lists with other RTK students, but that’s about it, really. The only other possible scenario is for someone to bring his lists over to another device. which brings us to pure backup. yes, that’d certainly be nice for someone to have, so he can ‘sync’ his progress between devices (how do you feel knowing that it’s your fault I’ll have to buy an androphone? somehow playing doom rpg on my old phone seems like a waste of downtime, when I could be reviewing kanji).
lastly, yeah I’m all for an external database with all kinds of additional stuff. and as far as I am concerned it could be grouped under ‘additional stuff’

That’s also why I wrote “first dragt” in the market description: they are still some bugs to be iron out.

draws the Kanji a bit too large (Galaxy) so that it will not be

I have noticed that in some devices it does not show completly unless you press the arrow on top that expand the drawing pad.
Unfortunatly I won’t be able to do much before I recode the KanjiView (I want it to be full open source soon). Just think of it as an “hint” for now

Hello! Love the new selection and display modes!
I am having a problem with kanji testing though; I have several saved lists but my most recent one has stopped working. When I load it and choose a quiz style option the screen goes black and the only way to exit is to minimize the entire app and go force close it. It also shows the cpu usage up around 50% when it is just 2% during vocab quizzes. This seems very odd. These are the kanji in the list: 置く（set or place, Which also has a inconsistency between the kanji info kanji and stroke order kanji) 式 石 調 査 熱 民 急 紀 倍 参 加 個 反 対 賛 成 果 宗 仏 祈 幸 福 交 換 祝 存 在 歴 史 怒 恋 識 殺 岩 真 戻 構 許 割 愛

Yes, all of my other lists work. It is just this most recent one. I created it after the update and it was working fine (Nov. 13) and then today (Nov 16) I went to use it again and it wasn’t working. Just going to the black screen like I said. I tried saving the list under a new name but that didn’t help.
Also, is there a way to test each kanji once? I saw someone type that they couldn’t find that option anymore, and neither can I.

hey, i just wanna thank you for all the hard work you’ve put into making Obenkyo. i’m new to the android and find this one of my favorite programs to use. i’m still feeling my way around my new device and your software, but so far i love it. when i get some time, i’ll post feedback on my experience with Obenkyo (currently version 3b).

However, I’ve found a quite frustrating bug. In the selection settings I can’t change what to display during tests. It always shows translation and nothing else, no matter what I’ve checked or unchecked. :S

Toujours aussi bien cette application!
Mais…. je suis frustré car dans cette nouvelle version, le test des kanjis répète trop souvent les mêmes kanjis… Alors qu’avant, lorsqu’un kanji était testé, il ne l’était plus durant tout le reste du test… Ce qui était fort pratique puisque ça permettait de revoir tous ses kanjis.
J’ai testé avec l’option “aléatoire” et “aléatoire pondéré” (dont je ne connais pas la différence).
à part cela, encore bravo!
J’aime beaucoup l’option de d’erreur de reconnaissance!
Manque un bouton pour tout effacer d’un coup, et pas seulement le dernier trait

La seule différence entre ces 2 options est que l’une ne prend pas en compte les “poids” de test (plus tu te trompes, plus un kanji reviendra souvent). Il y avait avant un mode “tester une fois chaque kanji”, mais j’ai cassé l’option avec la dernière update.

I’m a happy user of the vocabulary tester.
a) I expected the progress/weight database to be moved to SD card as well (I cant find it in the SQLite db), so I can create a backup and/or manipulate it (so I can influence the repetitions to mike liking). Would be nice to have progress data in the SD card.
b) I’m also not quite sure I understand how the weighting works (in weighted random test). I feel it does not place enouhg weight on the not gree ones, that is too much repetition of the already known vocabulary.

Hi,
1) Great idea but for now I don’t intent to implement it for V1 (it should be out in the coming days, I am mainly waiting for the translations right now).
I will try to think how to implement it (maybe as a specific field in the exported file, and a popup will ask you if you want to apply the score in the file
2) hopefully (if there is not a bug remaining) the numbers are linked to a score:
<21 green
<51 yellow
< 101 orange
and the +101 is red
for the test I do a sum of all the weight of all selected char and search of a random number between 0 and the total.
so if you have a word that have a weight of "1" he will have less chances to be selected than a number with a weight of 20.
let's say that the grand total is 1000, you will have 1/1000 chances to get the "1" and 20/1000 to get the "20"
Indeed they will still have chances to show up, but not that much.
I have to update it for the code to be smarter (like : exclude it if it was green and the user just answered correctly), but right now I have other priorities.

I don’t think it should be excluded if it is green at all. This way, every once in a while you get a word that you studied long ago, but perhaps don’t quite remember. This is good for long-term memory.

thanks for having developed this fantastic app. I DO appreciate very much. Totally indispensable for me.
My issue: since the latest update I have big trouble during the Kanji-Test (find Kanji multiple choice) when I want to check the stroke order, reading or compounds made of the kanji.
In other words, I select a Kanji, get the information if i chose correct (below the six possibilities of the new kanji shown) and tip the small icon. The test-history pops up and I again tip the Kanji I want information about. Since the update the information shown belongs to a completely different Kanji and not to the one I was tested and wanted information about.
Don’t know if you know about that issue. Maybe it is just on my phone??
Anyway, really great work!!!

It’s not your phone, I have managed to reproduce the bug : the fact is that you are using Obenkyo with “School level” and there was a “big bug”.
I will try to find a fix quickly and I intent to release in the coming hours the new version release with your fix

Alors, j’aimerai déjà apporter une info, Obenkyo est disponible sur les Smartphones et tablettes basés sur Android (donc pas les iPhones, basés sur iOS) ( il est important de le noter
).
Maintenant il n’est en effet pas disponible sur PC pour le moment … pour diverses raisons, la première étant que l’objectif est de permettre la révision dans le metro & co.
Si tu veux réviser sur PC, je ne peux que te conseiller d’aller chercher l’un des multiples sites sur internet dont: japan-activator.com
Le site est tout en Français, a de nombreuses ressources et tests.
Maintenant si tu veux une vraie application sur Windows, il faudra sans doute attendre Windows8 et son market pour avoir la visibilité minimale pour qu’un projet comme Obenkyo ait de l’interet

Right now there is no easy way to get it in the Kindle fire. I am working on pushing Obenkyo on it but there is some hurdle I have to work on before I can push it.
