Another functionality that was very often requested was the ability to export and to import back personal lists.
Obenkyo 3.0.4 makes the very first baby step in this direction (there is still much work to do about this).

First, as of 3.0.4, the only thing handled is the importing of personal lists. You won’t be able to add a new vocabulary or to change the content of the Obenkyo database.
Don’t worry, it will come in the future.
So now you will find 2 new buttons on the interface: the import and export file
The export button will copy a file with the same name as the personal list, adding “_K.txt” for kanji and “_V” for vocabulary (here: test_K.txt)
The file will be copied in the “Obenkyo_data” folder created in by the app at first runtime in the external storage.
File format: (note that since it is a first draft, it is subject to change)
For the kanji, I have just concatenated all the kanji in the list.
Here the list is : 一二三四五六七八九十百千右雨円下火何学外気間金休見月後午校語高行左山国今車出子時小上書女水生食人前川先西長 …
Here adding a kanji in the list should be very straightforward, and Obenkyo will handle everything else.
For the vocabulary, the current file format is a kind of CSV files with as the first column the index in the database, and as the second column the writing of the vocabulary:

Here you are not supposed to know the index in the database, so if you want to add a word in your list, you can just omit the index number and write the vocabulary writing:

When I export a file (vocab), all that I can see after opening it on my mac, is gibberish.

The reason why it is show as gibberish is that your editor does not consider the file as “unicode”.
You should try to see the program if there is not an option to change the way the file is read.
Otherwise you should try another program.
I am sorry I am really not familiar with mac so I can’t help you much with it ^^;

OK, now I got it…
1. open textedit on mac
2. select ‘Preferences’
3. select ‘Open and Save’
4. Under ‘Plain Text File Encoding’ select ‘Unicode (UTF-8)’ for ‘Opening Files’
5. open exported file
Is there also a way that I can export the whole thing, i.e. for example a vocab list including the kana writing and meaning?
Great app btw…especially considering how far it came from 9 months ago when I first installed it

Hmm…for example to change the meaning…to take out some not so common meanings and add some common meanings…for example the most common meaning for ボタン is button (and is missing), whereas moutan is a meaning that I might consider as not as important at the moment.
Also this would allow for complete export of the list which would allow one to study in a different form…maybe print it out when one feels more comfortable studying on paper.
No hurry though…as I said…great app

To change the content of the database is problematic for me on many levels :p
But the way I code the database is bound to change anyway so I guess that the change will have to be made.

Hi. Import doesn’t seem to work. You get a “choose file” button after pressing import, but it doesn’t work. The “choose file” button appears dead and you can’t actually choose any files. What’s going on about this?

Je vais updater mon téléphone et donc à priori perdred bcp d’info personnelles des applications.
J’aimerais bien sûr ne rien perdre des mes données d’obenkyo: y a t il des fichiers au sauvegarder et restaurer en particulier ?
Mon tel : SE-X10.
Sur la sdcard, j’ai dans Obenkyo_data un seul fichier Ns2_k (et le repertoire font encore vide).

Bonjour,
Dans le fichier Obenkyo Data, tu ne pourras trouver que les listes personnelles que tu as exporté.
Maleureusement les infos de score et les paramètres sont situés dans un autre fichier, qui est protégé par Android (en gros, il faudrait que tu sois root pour y avoir acces ou que l’appli copie le contenu de ce fichier dans un répertoire non sécurisé).
et se pose la question : si l’appli va aller bidouiller dans ses fichiers alors que l’appli est en fonctionnement, comment va réagir l’OS :/
Une autre solution, serait d’utiliser une appli de backup tel que “Titanium Backup”. Je ne l’ai jamais utilisé personnellement, mais il semble qu’il permette de sauvegarder les apps, et de les restaurer sur un nouveau mobile. Ca vaudrait le coup d’essayer …
Mais oui, ce genre de question reviens de plus en plus souvent … il va falloir que je trouve une solution pour ce genre de synchronisation …

Dans mon cas, c’est trop tard, j’ai fait mon upgrade… J’ai donc perdu mes listes, mais ce n’est pas grave, ce sera un bon exercice de les refaire…
Une solution très simple, serait de tout mettre sur la SD uniquement. D’autres applis que j’ai réinstallées après mon upgrade d’android ont récupéré leur données sans aucun problème, comme si rien ne s’était passé.
Quand à rooter mon tel, j’y reviendrai bientôt, mais c’est un mode plutôt expert et risqué…

Je sais comment faire pour sauvegarder des paramètres d’une install sur une autre, mais ça veux dire “d’une install sur une autre” … et ce que je viserai ça serait plus une “synchro sur un service cloud” … donc en gros tous tes devices “qui sont syncrhonisés à ce service” auront les mêmes listes et les mêmes scores … ça serait cool … mais je suis loin d’avoir commencé encore ^^;; c’est que ça en represente du boulo :p

Hey!
Import for vocabulary does not work. I made it unicode, _v.txt, did everything like you wrote. I even tried to only copy paste the example words

but nothing. The list shows up on the list when I press ‘Import’, I click on it and it loads for a while then nothing happens, or force closes. The nothing happens version was when I made my own list, and I noticed it had “microwave oven” in it, which is not in Obenkyo, so I guessed that was the problem. So I just pasted the three example words from this article, tried to load it… and force close.
I have a Motorola Defy, Android 2.3.7. Is there any solution? It is extremely hard to make personal lists on the phone, but the vocab practice part is so good, I want to use it :/ By the way, the kanji personal list import works perfectly fine.
Maybe the question was asked before, I don’t speak french.

It is strange :/
Can you try to create a simple list on the phone, then export it. See if it shows up. Then find it back on the phone and try to overwrite it.

Seems like the format was the problem, the exported txt is “UTF-8″, mine was simply “Unicode”. However, if I make a new txt and save it as UTF-8, it doesn’t work.. dunno. But I can make lists now, so it’s okay, thanks again!

Atomusk, can you suggest a text editor for android that can let me save txt files in utf-8? I prefer studying when I’m out and about, and building vocabulary lists is part of the drill.

Hi! I love this program, but I can’t understand why I my personal list doesn’t work… Obenkyo sees my file, but when I click on “import” or on “load” it says loading and then nothing happens… I tried as Kdava and Andrew said, but still it won’t open my file…

Thanks for the software and the tip about Notepad++. I started using Jota+ and have come to appreciate it.
I have a question about the size of uploaded vocabulary lists. Is there a limit? I tried to import a list of just under 600 words, but when I try to load it it shows only 195 words are in the list. What gives?
Would appreciate you help.
