Am I late for analytics? maybe…. maybe… but I had a lot of work on obenkyo lately… no i’m not searching for excuses :p here is the october / november analytics, after the break
November was special because of the release of the V3 of the application. While I did not hoped much, it had an effect on the new users, while the number of new users was falling slowly to the 250/days, it rose to 300-350 to the end of november, and it’s quite pleasent
. interestingly enought, new users were mostly from Germany, russia and japan.
Active users rose from 1900 users daily to 2200. Most active country are US, France, Japan, Germany, Russia. Surprising, South Korea is slowly fading, I would really like to have help from somebody to translate the application.
As always, most popular test sessions are Multiple choices and drawing, to Kanji, or Hiragana, then katakana. Numbers, vocabulary and particules are not really popular, and so is the keyboard.
Most popular devices worldwide were Galaxy S2, Galaxy S, HTC desire, Galaxy Ace, and HTC Wildfire
Thanks a lot to all of you who activate the analytics, I know that with the Carrier IQ, you consider your privacy very much, and I want to show you the analytics are a valuable source of information, and not a privacy issue.

Okay, from now, i’ll switch back analytics to enabled !
Usually not very a big fan of background sent unknown data but here, you convinced me
By the way, I consider that your app is THE ultimate Japanese learning app on Android / PC / web. And I tried a lot !
Thanks a lot for it !

Hi Knoodrake, thank you
Glad you like Obenkyo, it motivate me to work on the next release (when I will find time from my work >_< )

I’ll also switch on analytics.
But results not always show real situation.
For example, I use multiple choice a lot, but I think it is not best way, because I can easily exclude wrong choices and choose right, but I wouldn’t be able to write translation so easily if I have no choices.
I’d prefer way implemented in ihatekanji.sourceforge.net : you have to write your translation, and it shows matching variants from transleton list. The same with translation to Japanese. I think you should write, not choose, to really memorize words.
Hope you implement such tests one day.
And thanks for perfect tool!

I have to check this program … The main reason I did not add this test mode is that I am not at this point in my Japanese learning ^^ … I must admit that I am not working seriously enough my Japanese the really improve … I must improve my app to force me to work my Japanese more

Yet, I’m not so sure it will be practical with a smartphone keyboard :/
might recommand to use Sasami for it :/
January 19th, 2012 - %I:%M %p
I use Obenkyo on tablet pc. But even on smartphone, I suppose following behaviour:
when we trying to translate to english, we just use usual smartphone keyboard as for sms.
when we trying to translate to japanese we have screen like “draw kanji”. The only difference, we have answer field between question and drawing area. We draw in drawing area kanji or kana symbol by symbol, pressing check after each. After pressing check in drawing area symbol is recognized and added to answer line, in which you could remove any character. And after answer line we have check answer button. When we enter all characters we press this button.
Hope you can understand my explanation.
What is Sasami?
January 19th, 2012 - %I:%M %p
I know I should not answer quickly from my job :p
I ment SIMEJI the Japanese IME on the android market.
Indeed, I have to code such a feature to enable a “drawing test” for the vocabulary.
Yet, the “drawing” part of the code is ongoing a “coding from scratch” phase in the hope the code quality will enable me to opensource it (I am not a good Java developper, Obenkyo is my first project so I need a little help on this code :p ).
I am waiting for this project to finish (priority right now is given to adding last chapters of the the grammar part and polishing a little bit the UI and bug fixes) before adding long overdue features linked with drawing (like drawing search).
January 19th, 2012 - %I:%M %p
I like name “vokabulary drawing test”. It is terse and sensefull.
I’m sorry but I can not help you with code, because as far as I know Obenyo is not opensource.
Also as I see drawing code for kana and kanji works pretty well, so I do not understand what do you mean “coding from scratch”.
January 19th, 2012 - %I:%M %p
Sorry for making things more complicated with my answers :p
Obenkyo is not Open source, but I intend to opensource the whole “kanji drawing” part of the code. In the process I have redone 90% of the code of the Kanji Drawing + recognition (so that people will be able to understand it :p).
Once this work is done, I will be able to open source the code and will ask for help to improve the drawing recognition with the data other users provided with the “report recognition error” feature.
I doubt many users will actually contribute, but I consider it is the least I can do to help back the KanjiVG community that provided me with the KanjiDrawing part :p
And don’t worry, I am working on it
January 27th, 2012 - %I:%M %p
One more question, would it be hard, to add one more checkbox, at start of kanji draw and vocabulary test? I mean, when we choose what to show, kanji, reading, translation. The check box should be “one of”. So if I’d check it, obenkyo will show either kanji either reading either translation.
I think it could be useful, because I mentioned, that during tests I’m ofter easily remember just kanji but I have no even slightest idea about what the reading, or vice versa, I know word by reading, but have no idea about kanji.

I’ve tryed to make a little donation, hope it’ll come well, so you receive not only annoying requests but also a little help.
January 27th, 2012 - %I:%M %p
I am not sure I understand your request. do you want a kind of “shuffle” test where I would show one of the 3 at random ?
Might not be so hard to code … I have to see how I could add it …
By the way, thank you very much for the donation, I really appreciate it

Yes, but not one of three. One of selected.
January 31st, 2012 - %I:%M %p
One more feature request if it is possible.
When I looking word or kanji clicking on green-yellow-red progress bar, is it possible to add filtering? For example when I click on yellow par of bar on top, show only kanji which are yellow. Or if it had just order them by color.
I just yesterday had expirience of searching just one word in whole list. It was not easy task.
Thanks in advance.

Interesting idea of shortcut … I have to see if I could not add it for future release (I hope I will be able to release an update with some FC fixe & all chapters of Tae kim guide).
I will see to add some of your requests for next version (sorry I had no time to work on it the past weeks)

Thanks a lot. I hope this features will be useful for other users.

I love you for create this program, thank you, it‘s very useful:)
February 21st, 2012 - %I:%M %p
Hello,
First of all, thanks for this great app.
I haven’t been using this app very long, but I already have a feature request.
Along the lines of what Jara said, When I study the kanjis I feel like I am only using the translation and never the reading. I wonder if it would be possible to have tests like: translation + reading -> kanji (already present), kanji -> translation and kanji -> reading.
Or maybe I missed something. I feel that with the current tests I will only know the kanji and its meaning, but not the reading because it is written smaller and I don’t read it…
Just my 2 cents,
Keep up the good work
February 21st, 2012 - %I:%M %p
It is true that I should be able to give you this opportunity :/
I will see if this is possible quicly, but I fear I will have to add this to the “to do” when I redo the interface …
sorry and thanks for your comment.
February 21st, 2012 - %I:%M %p
Hey,
No need to apologize
This is a great app you started for yourself and decided to share with others.
Kudos to you.
I’m just suggesting stuff.
February 23rd, 2012 - %I:%M %p
Wonderful app..learned 100s of vocab thanks to it
One suggestion i would like to make….how about adding example sentences to the vocab?…i think it will be easier to remember that way
February 24th, 2012 - %I:%M %p
Hi Hari,
My main concerns with adding sentences is :
- Finding them ^^ tatoeba is a great source of sentences, but I fear that there won’t be sentences for all my vocabulary need, and for all the “vocabulary meaning”
- it takes a great amount of time (and I am struggling to find time right now to pass a simple update to Obenkyo – hopefully this weekend >_<)
But yes, it would be great to have and even to to a test with it … maybe one day
thanks for the suggestion

I really enjoy Obenkyo. Best Japanese learning program I’ve found yet.
I do have a question, though. When I do the “Kanji drawing practice mode”, it always only gives me the same 50 or so Kanji to draw. I’d like to try my hand with other Kanji besides these initial Kanji. Are only 50 or so included with the program, or is there a way to practice more than just these Kanji?
February 26th, 2012 - %I:%M %p
hi,
The “50 number” is only the number of question on a test session (this number can be changed in the setting view).
But you should be able to change the kana/kanji to be tested on, using the “Crayon” button.
On the kanji view you will be able to see the levels you will be tested on, and inside the lists, you will be able to select just the one you want and eventually save the list.
I hope I am clear enougth and I understood you question ^^

Hello! Obenkyou was what I was looking for, an offline app with JLPT-specific vocabulary quizzing. And Kanji quizzing even!! Thanks to you I passed the JLPT N3 last December. I just have a concern. Right now, I’m unable to use Obenkyou. I switched the vocabulary set to N2 and after that in Quizzing 0 terms appear. I switched it back to N3 but still 0 terms. What can I do to fix this? Thanks a lot! Great work!

Hi,
Happy to hear that my app could be helpfull to you
It’s the first time I hear such an issue, and I can’t seems to reproduce it … :/
What is your device/OS version ?
Just to be sure, do you have the last version of the “Play store” (New name of the Android Market) – should be 3.1.4.
the last solution would be to uninstall the app completly and to reinstall it but I am sorry to tell you that you will lose all your progress :/
Sorry for the inconvenience

Moi je dis que le module vocabulaire est fort utile ! Je n’utilise presque plus que cela (je suis au Japon, j’en ai bien besoin).
Puis je me permettre une suggestion toutefois ?
C’est déjà très bien tel quel, mais des fois j’aurais besoin de dissocier l’apprentissage de la prononciation (la lecture) de celle de l’écriture…
Pourrais tu donc, pour le vocabulaire proposer des tests du type:
écriture -> trouver la lecture
ecriture -> trouver le sens (avec (comme déjà auj.) ou sans la lecture, en option)
Et inversement:
sens -> trouver l’écriture (avec (comme actuellement) ou sans la lecture)
sens -> trouver la lecture (seule ou non).
Toujours à propos de ce module, il y a une petite erreur dans le comptage des mots (la note est ok).
Sinon, comme toujours, bravo pour cette très bonne appli, que je suis dépuis plus d’un an maintenant !!
)
July 2nd, 2012 - %I:%M %p
Heureux que ça te serve
Déjà, qu’entend tu par une erreur de comptage des mots ??
sinon concernant les combinaisons de test j’aimerai trouver une belle façon de le présenter … parce que si c’est pour avoir une longue liste des différentes combinaisons de tests ://
merci pour ce retour
July 3rd, 2012 - %I:%M %p
Salut Atomusk
)
Enfin, bon courage en tous cas, c’est du travail je parie !
Merci encore !
